Canada launches Responsible Data Centre Development Principles — how AHI lines up

On September 3, 2026 the Government of Canada launched Canada’s Responsible Data Centre Development Principles — five national expectations for how data centres are built. “If you build in Canada, you must build responsibly and transparently and you must build for Canadians,” said the Hon. Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation.

AHI has published its own assessment of how the campus lines up with each principle.

Lasting local benefits: local trades hired first, a new County and school tax base from the first phase, partnership with Turning Stone Developments, a Métis-owned company. No electricity costs shifted to Canadians: power generated behind the fence; no grid draw to run the campus. Minimal water: zero municipal water, a sealed closed loop. Transparency: approvals through the County’s public process, independent sound assessments, plain-language answers. Strategic value to Canada: Canadian infrastructure on Canadian soil.

The Principles are a national baseline that complements provincial, municipal and Indigenous processes — and they arrive alongside Alberta’s own AI Data Centres Strategy, to which AHI’s alignment is also published.
